New Year Resolutions - Why?

Happy New Year everyone! I'm probably not the first to say this but I am glad that 2016 is over. I am determined to make 2017 a great year and expand in terms of my education and blogging career. Now, I've come up with a list of New Years' resolutions which I will share in a moment, but they had me thinking. Why are we so quick to shun and shame those who come up with resolutions.
There are often pictures circling online taking the mick out of people who claim a "new year, new me"  - the question I want answered is why?

A new year presents a fresh start for many and mentally makes it easier to think of and act upon ways of bettering ourselves. So why are we all so quick to judge? Yes there may be a wave of people hitting the gym January 1st and yes we may all get a bit philosophical when we talk about how we're going to improve ourselves - but shouldn't that be a good thing? As a society we judge people around us and put pressure on ourselves to be better. If we're each individually trying to do that shouldn't we be supporting instead of shaming?

New Years resolutions do not have to be drastic. Some people focus on the little things - eating their 5 a day, reading more or spending more time with family. These little things are the what should be encouraged. After a year of many ups and downs I sat at my desk and came up with a list of things that I want to do better in 2017.

1. Blog More Regularly - I'm aiming to blog at least 1-2 times a week. That's the goal. Blogging is something that I love and I want to make more time for it, as well as producing quality content.

2. Keep On Top Of School Work - I have a goal. I want to attend University and have a career. That all starts at school. Doing my A levels is proving hard, but as long as I can keep on top of it all, it will help to make it a little easier.

3. Read More - I love reading, James Patterson being my favourite. I need to find the time to switch off the tech and get lost in a book.

4. Get Out of My Comfort Zone - I normally dress and buy things that I'm used to. But I want to start to get out of my comfort zone.

5. Volunteer - This may come later in the year, more like summer time. But. it's a great thing to put on my cv and will make me feel as if I'm giving something back. I may look at local charity shops to see if they'd let me in for a few months.

I don't want anyone to feel as if they will be looked weirdly upon if they have resolutions. Just because the internet pokes fun at them doesn't mean you shouldn't come up with any. There's a stigma surrounding resolutions that they have to be weight and body orientated - they don't. Maybe focus on your mental health and being happy. Doing the things that bring you joy and just taking time to unwind.
If you have any resolutions leave yours in the comments - I'd love to know!
